The Princess and the Frog

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Today as a treat for Bridget for having her “listening ears” on at school all week (not at home mind you, but at school they say she’s been doing much better) I took her to see The Princess and the Frog after school.

I was hesitant. See, I have this love/hate thing with the Disney princesses. I love them, just because she loves them. But I hate them because of the horrible message they send to young girls. But I figure it’s my job as a parent to try to filter out the bad messages like the best you can hope for is to marry a man who will take you away from it all. If she likes the pretty, frilly dresses and all that crap, what’s the harm?

This one I had some higher hopes for because the main character is a hard working waitress, not some simpering milk toast fragile princess waiting for someone to come put a glass slipper on her foot. I was not let down. The message of the movie was about love but in a much more evolved way – making sacrifices for the one you love, working hard, and getting your reward. I really really liked it. Plus the music was fantastic.

There are some definite scary moments, similar to what you find in The Little Mermaid or Finding Nemo. So if your kid can handle that, it shouldn’t be a problem here. I held Bridget in my lap through those parts and whispered to her that it was just pretend, and not real, and she was fine with that.

When it was over she immediately said she wanted to watch it again. I kinda do too.

Paranormal Activity

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Yesterday I was able to make it to a movie, the first time in a long time. I was very torn because there are so many things out that I want to see. I finally decided on Paranormal Activity because I’m feeling Halloween-y and I always love a good scary movie. I rarely find them truly scary but I always hold out hope that one of these days someone will make a great scary movie.

Today was not the day.

Don’t get me wrong. The movie was pretty good. It’s made to look like a documentary of footage taken by the couple the story is about, and it’s very much like The Blair Witch Project.  And like Blair Witch, it left me feeling like, “huh” at the end. It was good. It had some VERY creepy moments. But I still hold that making the audience jump is not scary. My toddler startles me all the time. There is no art to that. And I was further annoyed that every single one of the scariest moments of the movie are in the trailer. So when they happened on screen, it had not much effect on me.

That being said, as I was trying to fall asleep last night, I was definitely thinking about the movie and some of the creepy things in it. They just didn’t bother me enough to keep me awake.

I say if you are looking for a fun creepy movie for Halloween fun, go see it. But don’t go in expecting to have the pants scared off of you. This just doesn’t deliver.

About Queen Bitchypants

I'm a mid-thirties gal trying to get my shit together in the midst of chaos: a divorce, a toddler and a dog. The cast of characters: EX (ex husband), Betsy (pseudonym for my three year old daughter) and Bowser (pseudonym for my dog, although why he needs one, I don't know, it just seemed fair since everyone else has one.)
